Event Review: African and Caribbean Cultural Day, Westbury Avenue, London N22

When: Saturday 23rd October 2010

What Happened:  So this was my second event where I had a stall selling my cakes.  This was the 4th year of the event which was part of a series of events celebrating Black History Month.  I arrived in good time to set up only to be told that I would be upstairs.  Now I had assumed that all the stalls would be together in the hall downstairs as I wasn't told otherwise.  If you're at an event that's on more than one floor and you are upstairs you are at an immediate disadvantage because a) not everybody can be bothered to go upstairs and b) not everyone is able to go upstairs because they may have a physical disability.

I wasn't happy nor were my fellow stall holders who were also upstairs with me and who were also not told that this is where they were going to be.

Nevertheless I got on with it.  There was a steady trickle of people that came through.  In the end I just covered the cost of my table.  I was one of the lucky ones as some stall holders didn't sell anything, but that's the risk you take when you take a stall at an event.  Once again the carrot cake was the most popular.

In the Beginning

I always feel that the first blog post is always the hardest.  What to say?  Well, I'll keep it brief (or try to) Nothing can beat a slice of homemade cake. I've always been into cakes, baking them for friends and family.  Never thought of doing it as a business.  Until I was made redundant in June this year-yeah I was one of  "lucky" group of 15 who were told that we were not quite good enough.  I still feel bitter-I have a right to feel bitter- but its fading a little bit each day.

I've been looking for jobs since June, but let me tell you, it is damn hard out there.  I've been applying for jobs everywhere from office jobs to retail jobs, but nothing...

So I decided that while I look for jobs, I will go about setting myself up as a cake baker/decorater.  I mean it can't do any harm can it?  And if it all works out, being a cake baker/decorator could eventually become my main full time job.

Now if you are on Facebook or Twitter, then there is the slight chance that you may have already had a look at some of the cakes that I have  made. I'm quite good, but there's always room for improvement and I just want to keep getting better and better...

So are you going to join me on my journey?
